MetLife Stadium achieved LEED v4.1 Gold for Existing Buildings and hosted eight matches including the final. The collective claims are specific: over 11,500 solar panels, more than 100 million gallons of potable water saved annually, over 5 million single use plastics eliminated, and daily sorting diverting over 90 percent of waste from landfill.
Meanwhile FIFA has committed under the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework to reduce emissions 50 percent by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040. Those are quantitative commitments that flow down to venues as data requests.
Why existing buildings certification is the hard one
It is worth separating the two families of certification, because venues frequently conflate them and then discover the difference during an audit.

The practical consequence: a venue can be beautifully designed and still fail to certify in operation, simply because it cannot produce a clean, continuous performance record.
The four data sets certification and ESG reporting both need
- Energy, disaggregated. Total consumption is table stakes. What differentiates is consumption by end use, by period, normalised for events and weather, with on site generation and self consumption separated from export.
- Water, by source and by end use. Potable versus non potable, harvested versus municipal versus groundwater, and reuse expressed as a measured share of demand rather than as installed capacity.
- Indoor environmental quality. Continuous CO2, PM2.5, temperature and humidity by zone, which is both a certification credit and a hospitality argument.
- Waste and diversion. Weight based diversion rates rather than volume estimates, integrated alongside the utility record so a single sustainability report has one source.
The reputational asymmetry
There is a version of this that is worth stating plainly. An unprovable green claim is worse than no claim at all. A venue that announces itself as the greenest in its category and cannot produce the operational data behind it has created a liability, because the claim invites exactly the scrutiny it cannot survive.
The venues in the strongest position are those that have already made the physical investment: solar, recycled water, rainwater harvesting, efficient fixtures. The infrastructure is real. What is missing is the measurement layer that turns it into evidence, and that is a far smaller and faster project than the infrastructure itself was.
